The Seven Shades of Life....
I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate
A poet, a pawn and a king
I've been up and down and over and out
And I know one thing
Each time I find myself flat on my face
I pick myself up and get back in the race
These are the lines from the song "That’s life" by Frank Sinatra. These lines reflect the transitions so well. Any song that’s written on life, would have these elements to it. It is better to be aware about the changing colors of life than to lament over it when we lose it. Each phase moves too fast or takes its own time depending upon the kind of attachment we have with it. It is always better to have loved and lost, than never loved…. Can be rephrased to It is better to have loved knowing it would be lost, than holding on to the pain when we lose it.
1. Inevitable Phase - breath
The love blooms and you would feel it to be the most beautiful thing to have happened to you. It seems "Inevitable". Be it a new product you purchased, a new born child, a newly found love or even something you got as a gift. You would be living every moment with it. You would find reasons to have it every next moment and being away seems like pain. In the case of a child, both the mother and child cannot be without each other and they are more one breath and one soul.
2. Necessity Phase - water
Then comes the first transition where it is necessary and not so inevitable. You would have other reasons to have time away from the things you love. Like a new year resolution on the second week of the new year. The love doesn't fade, but you have other emergencies which would take the space of that love. Then the love becomes more like a medicine which is needed but at regular intervals. When a child grows up to be a toddler, he would need the mother, but needs the "me" time too. The transition is like something turns from breath to water, though needed, not so constant in the need.
3. Importance Phase - food
Then the relation or love moves to a phase three of life. The love is important, but one among the many other important things in life. the relation moves from being water to food. You would need food, but not like water or air, but at regular intervals and may be at times we can skip a meal or two, but still survive. That’s the time like that in a child's life when he has friends at school. Mama is important but friends are too. In case of dress or a gift, they would still bring a smile but not always needed.
4. Priority Phase - special dish
Important people in life are remembered when there is a problem or a necessity. They are like a bandage or a medicine for burns. You don’t need them on a daily basis. They don't look that attractive anymore but have the importance and priority. When a child grows up to be a teen, many a times parents are priority when it comes to taking decisions. In case of love, it is a reminder to make sure life is still running smooth. It moves from being food to may be a special dish in life, which though loved need not be there for every meal.
5. Option Phase - festivity
Life takes a turn, when it really starts to hurt and when we start searching for the meaning of life. A child growing up to be an adult, he or she has his or her own priorities importance and necessities... when the loved ones become an option. They are like festive days. You know they are there and whether to celebrate it or not. The pain a loved one goes through would be evident only when they tell us. Being an option in life is time to check where and how you have spent your love.
6. Obvious Phase - Sunlight
Though we call old age the dusk of life, it is like the time when you become sunlight. Important and necessary, but without being realized. Obviously we are there for our loved ones, but rarely do we look for it knowing that it is there. In relationships, we know that there is love, but don’t feel the need to express it, as it is obvious. Something which we got as a gift for our previous birthday remains in the table or the cupboard, and we don’t need to take it in our hands and see it each day. It has become obvious and lost its charm. Such is this phase.
7. Forgotten phase - Photograph
A reminder in life, can kindle the thought again. Something forgotten but still we cherish. Relationships fade to a forgotten phase and there exists no warmth, but a faint memory which can bring a smile or two. Some gifts we received with so much of love becomes a part of the trash bag or donated to someone who might need it. A photograph can bring in the memories of the moment, but the choice is yours whether to look at it or not.
Seven shades of life, each one has its importance but it fades too. Many don’t have the gratitude that they had the first four phases in life and start complaining when they reach the fifth. It is a choice we make whether we accept the change, but the change is inevitable.... Such is life. Of all the things we love in our life, we see the transition of its existence. The phases the love goes through is very subtle at times and sometimes can be harsh. Live life with a smile and share the smile forward with the knowledge that what is inevitable today can be forgotten tomorrow… That’s life... Que sera sera... Whatever will be, will be….
